I judge live albums a little bit differently than standard LPs. Where the release of a new LP is a treat of new music, live albums often include songs that have already been released. Sometimes a live album is a de facto greatest hits record. Sometimes the songs are reworked or re-imagined. Sometimes something is captured that can only come from live performance. ‘Darkness Alive’ serves both as a greatest hits and a fun capturing of live energy. The venue’s reverb adds bombast. The vocals feel a bit rushed and over-excited, which adds energy and intensity. W.E.B. also recorded the audience and stage banter. It’s a tremendous pet peeve of mine when bands edit these out. It’s a live album! I want to hear the audience, too. All in all, purchasing this album will depend on your fandom. If you’re a mega-fan of W.E.B., it would be worth it to own. If you’re curious about W.E.B., it’s a great collection to sample the works of their career. If you fall somewhere in between, then perhaps just give it a stream to check it out. It’s a quality metal album.

It’s possible for an album to be a “Great Album” and “For Niche Tastes Only”. One rating isn’t always better than another.
