Cognizance - In Light, No Shape
"If you’re looking for the most awe-inspiring tech death, look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for really good songs..."
Artist: Cognizance Album Title: In Light, No Shape Record Label: Willowtip Records Genre: Technical Death/Progressive Metal For Fans Of: The Faceless, Vale of Pnath, The Zenith Passage, The Schoenberg Automaton Release Date: May 1st, 2026
Somewhere at the intersection where technical death metal meets prog, Cognizance is getting down with melodic chops. The speed and intensity on display are impressive, but never overshadow any of the groove or melodies. This is the place inside the Venn diagram I find the most pleasure. ‘In Light, No Shape’ tickles that guitar nerd itch, while staying firmly in the pocket. This is all helped by the fact that the band knows how to craft an atmosphere just as well as a sick riff. These moments give the songs just enough variety and dynamics to keep each next burst fresh and heavy. If you’re looking for the most awe-inspiring tech death, look elsewhere, but if you’re looking for really good songs, Cognizance has the goods.

It’s possible for an album to be a “Great Album” and “For Niche Tastes Only”. One rating isn’t always better than another.
